Dr. LAURA LECHUGA GÓMEZ RECEIVES THE BURDINOLA RESEARCH AWARD in its XVIII edition -The award recognizes her work on Advances in Nanomedicine, Nanodiagnosis, Regenerative Medicine and Personalized Therapy.

The 18th edition of the Burdinola Research Award was presented to Dr. Laura Lechuga Gómez in the Aula Magna of the Casa de Convalescència of the UAB, in a ceremony chaired by the Director of the CERCA Institution, Mr. Lluis Rovira i Duck.
The award recognizes her outstanding research work in the field of Nanomedicine, and specifically in the advances in regenerative medicine and personalized therapy of Dr. Laura Lechuga Gómez. The winner, she directs at the ICN2 the research group "Nanobiosensors and Bioanalytical Applications" oriented towards Nanomedicine and which has more than 20 members. She is also a Research Professor at the CSIC and is linked to the CIBER-BBN (Biomaterials, Bioengineering and Nanomedicine) of the Carlos III Health Institute.
The jury has been chaired by Doctor Joseba Pineda, dean of the UPV / EHU Faculty of Medicine and Nursing, being secretary the Director of the Euskoiker University-Business Foundation, Doctor Alfonso Hernández and five prestigious members: Doctor Maria Ángeles Muñoz, Doctor Maria José Alonso, Doctor Arkaitz Carracedo, Doctor Josep Samitier and Don Mikel Martínez, General Director of Burdinola, the latter with voice but without vote.
The secretary, Mr. Alfonso Hernández has read the minutes and the Managing Director of Burdinola, Mr. Mikel Martínez, has delivered the award and the financial endowment of € 15,000.
The event has brought together a large part of the scientific and university community of the city, with an outstanding attendance of professionals.
During it, the Director General of Burdinola has dedicated part of his intervention to highlighting the future value of research activity to move towards a progressive and more competitive society, highlighting the example of the new winner of the Research Prize Burdinola.
The awarded
Professor Laura Lechuga received her doctorate in Chemistry from the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain) in 1992. She is Professor of the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) and Head of the Group of Nanobiosensors and Bioanalytical Applications of the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2 ) in Barcelona (Spain) and at the Center for Biomedical Research on the Net (CIBER-BBN). She has been Adjunct Professor at the Artic University of Norway (2012-2016) and Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Campinas (Brazil) (2013-2017).
Dr. Laura Lechuga has been recognized by the jury of the XVIII Burdinola Research Award as the recipient of this award, which in this edition has wanted to distinguish the most outstanding work in the Nanomedicine field: nanodiagnosis, regenerative medicine and personalized therapy. At the jury meeting, her leadership and her pioneering attitude, transfer activity and international visibility were especially highlighted.
Dr. Lechuga's laboratory, created in 1998, a pioneer in the area of Nanodiagnosis, is today a world reference in the field of nanobiosensor devices based on photonic principles. Dr. Lechuga stands out for combining both the basic science aspect and a sophisticated technological development of devices, always with her own ideas and designs, which have been implemented in pioneering technologies at an international level with a notable interdisciplinarity in physics, microtechnologies, photonics, biology and medicine and demonstrating its direct applicability in the diagnosis of diseas (mainly cancer and infectious diseases).
In the field of Nanodiagnosis, his most important scientific contributions focus on the development of high sensitivity and miniaturizable nanoplasmonic and nanoplasmonic biosensors, developed with his own ideas and technology, as well as on the technological transfer of his results. His work has been an international pioneer in photonic biosensor devices such as the Mach-Zehnder interferometer and bimodal interferometric guides, the magnetoplasmonic biosensor or the waveguide microlever biosensor. His great experience in the biofunctionalization of sensor surfaces and in the application of the devices, has allowed the use of them for the evaluation of real problems such as the early diagnosis of diseases such as cancer or infectious diseases, directly in human samples, in a fast and accurate. One of the main achievements of his work is the development of functional platforms type "lab-on-a-chip", with the integration of biosensors, microfluidics, electronics, hardware and software in a single platform, in a device that It can be used outside the laboratory environment (“point-of-care” device).
His high international impact is reflected in his impressive CV, where it should be noted that he has published more than 270 research papers (h-index = 51 and more than 9900 citations, Google Scholar) and has given more than 365 invited lectures around the world. , including the most prestigious conferences in its field. One of the main aspects to highlight of his scientific career is his translational vocation, with an important and successful work of technology transfer, including the management of 8 patent families, the creation of two spin-off companies: SENSIA, SL (2004) and BIOD, SL (2010), the transfer of various patents and collaboration with numerous companies of national relevance, which began very early with a successful collaboration during their Doctoral Thesis stage (1990) with the company Tabacalera, SA.
The award
An activity in direct contact with the research teams and a special sensitivity to the social environment, germinated in the Burdinola company the idea of creating an award that would contribute to the recognition, appreciation and encouragement of the scientific community. This purpose materialized in 1993 with the launch of the first Burdinola Research Award. Since then, the list of winners has grown with illustrious names in Spanish scientific activity.
